In this episode, your hosts talk about the United State’s handling of drugs, most visibly Marijuana. What would decriminalization do? How has the war on drugs affected our nation? Does water have memory? What’s the difference between legalization and decriminalization? And when will we get that rhetorician cowbell?

  1. I commend to you the 1999 documentary “Grass” which charts the history of marijuana criminalisation. It’s from a legalisation perspective but should really be shown to fiscal conservatives. I think what’s missing from the discussion is the US moves to stop decriminalisation efforts overseas. I think that made the global issues so much worse.

As for US administration officials losing their jobs due to drug use: I suspect they did not declare drug use as part of their security clearance process. It’s not the admission that gets you, it’s the lie!

Also, you’d benefit from having a woman on the panel.

  2. Toward the beginning of rhenn by podcast, one of you mentioned that simple possession of cannabis was never a felony. I am an aging flower child of the 60’s and remember when, in California, ANY amount of of cannabis found on your person, car, orr tree residence was a felony. I had a friend in high school who was busted for a small amount of cannabis, arrested, charged with a felony, etc. It was also a felony to simply “be in and around a place where marijuana was smoked”.

  3. This was an interesting topic for me. However, I wish you had dealt more with addiction as I have a daughter who is an I.V. drug abuser. Jake, your perspective on this topic aligns pretty closely with mine as you had a father who was an addict. Perhaps “addiction” of all types could be grist for a separate episode. Suggestions for other topics:
    1. The state prison industrial complex. Yes,!private prisons are a problem, but the state is also heavily invested in keeping people incarcerated. Think construction, maintenance, prison guard unions, employment, the resultant tax revenue etc. Follow the money. I speak from experience having worked for a state prison for 21 years.
    2. International trade and its impact on climate change. Think about a more local economy. Sorry this may get in the way of importing tasty beverages from Scotland.
    3. Electric vehicles. As the recent buyer of an E.V. And the ubiquitous availability of public fast charging stations, I wonder why anyone would buy a gas guzzler.
